YRDSB fires embattled Director of Education

By News Staff

On the heels of a damning provincial report, the embattled York Region District School Board has fired its Director of Education.

J. Phillip Parappally had been at the board for 17 years, the last three as director.

A recent review from the Ministry of Education was critical of his lack of leadership, his relationships with staff and trustees as well as his conduct with parents.

In a brief statement, the Board says it has already begun the search for an interim director, working directly with Ontario’s Ministry of Education to determine the best candidate to fill the vacancy, and to allow work to continue with minimal disruption.

“We wish to acknowledge Mr. Parappally’s 17 years of service with our Board and wish him the very best on the next chapter of his life,” said Board chair Loralea Carruthers.

“We look forward to getting back to serving parents and students with integrity and excellence in an environment that is frugal, transparent and free of bias.”

Associate Director of Education Leslie Johnstone has been appointed Acting Director of Education until an interim Director is appointed.
