Toronto police looking for man, woman accused of lottery fraud

By News Staff

Toronto police are looking for two people accused of concocting an elaborate story to defraud a 54-year-old man of his money.

On Sept. 29, the man was shopping near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue East, when he noticed a woman crying and asking for help.

When he approached her, the woman said she had a winning $2-million lottery ticket, but couldn’t claim the prize because she was an illegal immigrant.

Then, another man approached, pretending not to know the woman, and offered to help. Police believe he was the woman’s accomplice.

It’s alleged the woman showed the men a fake ticket and told them she would split the winnings with them. The men went to a lottery kiosk to print the winning numbers, which matched the numbers on the fake ticket.

The woman then reportedly said she wanted $10,000 up front. So, the men went to a bank and the victim handed over his money to the woman.

The second man said he was going to photocopy the winning ticket and left.

Meanwhile, the woman pretended she had an upset stomach and asked the victim to buy her medication.

When the victim returned, the woman was gone.

Police have released security camera images of the woman and her accomplice and are asking anyone with information to call them or Crime Stoppers.
