Taxi driver killed in York Mills crash, police investigate 3 other crashes

A taxi driver is dead and three other people are in hospital after four separate crashes in Toronto.

The fatal crash involving two vehicles, one of them a Beck taxicab, happened on York Mills Road east of Yonge Street just before 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Police say the 18-year-old driver of a Mercedes was heading east on York Mills when he lost control and struck a hydro pole. He then veered into the westbound lanes and hit the taxi head-on, killing the 49-year-old man.

“We are devastated to hear the news about this morning’s accident. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We will do whatever we can to support Toronto Police in their investigation,” Beck Taxi said in a statement.

The driver of the Mercedes was taken to hospital but has since been arrested. There is no word on charges.

Police say they don’t believe alcohol was a factor in the crash but are investigating whether speed played a role.

Police investigate three other crashes in Toronto

Police are also investigating three other crashes, one near Exhibition Place, one in North York and another in Etobicoke.

A man has serious injuries after he struck a pole near Nova Scotia Avenue and Quebec Street, just below the Gardiner Expressway around 7:40 a.m. Police said the driver suffered a medical issue before he hit the pole.

Emergency crews were also called to a multi-vehicle crash near Don Valley Parkway and Eglinton Avenue around 2:45 a.m. One person has serious injuries.

Around the same time, a vehicle caught fire after crashing into a hydro pole at Kipling Avenue and Panorama Court, near Finch Avenue West. The driver, a 34-year-old man, was able to get out of the burning car and was taken to hospital with facial injuries.
