Registering for spring, summer recreation programs will be easier this time: Tory

By Kevin Misener and News staff

Registration for the City of Toronto’s spring and summer recreation programs starts on Saturday, and Mayor John Tory is promising a smoother signup process this time around.

Residents in Etobicoke and York will be the first to sign up at 7 a.m. on Saturday, followed by Scarborough on Sunday, North York on Tuesday and East York on Wednesday.

City officials are hoping that the days of waiting for hours and hours on your computer or your smartphone trying to register your kids for recreations programs are over – especially for those trying to sign up for March Break activities.

Tory said it should be a quicker process this year due to computer upgrades.

“We increased our server capacity dramatically to allow the people to get into the system faster,” Tory said at the York Recreation Centre on Friday.

“The result of this in the last signup was that 34 per cent more registrations were completed in the first 15 minutes.”

According to the city, server capacity was increased by 25 per cent to allow more people to access the system online, as well as providing clearer navigation and online planning tools.

With 91 per cent of all registrations now completed online, the city is also working and shopping around to buy a brand-new technology registration system. Officials hope to have the new system in place by the end of the year or early 2018.

The city is also inviting residents to tell them what they think about the online improvements. You can complete the survey online or email your feedback to makingitbetter@toronto.ca.

Toronto Parks and Recreation offers 23,000 programs for up to 250,000 participants. Click here for a step-by-step guide on how to register.
