Toronto students may soon be taking the ultimate field trips via virtual reality

By Audra Brown

Students in the Toronto District School Board may soon be taking field trips to places like the Colosseum in Rome, touring London and even flying over Mount Everest, and they’ll be back before lunch.

Virtual reality is now allowing teachers to completely immerse their students into the curriculum in a way that books or computer screens just can’t match.

And advancements in smart phone capabilities mean kids can have the virtual reality experience for just a few dollars with a simple cardboard viewer.

Joseph Romano, the vice-principal at Mason Road Public School, is hoping to be among the first to bring virtual reality to elementary students at the TDSB.

“It’s more tangible. It allows students to really see and experience what it is they are learning about.” Romano says.

He hopes to have a classroom full of virtual reality viewers by this spring.
