Woman falls into Musselman’s Lake as police issue ice warning

By News Staff

A woman in her late 70s is recovering in hospital after she was pulled from Musselman’s Lake late Thursday night, as police issued a warning about ice safety.

York police say the woman left her residence around 11 p.m. and was walking across the lake. As she approached the opposite shore, she fell through the ice. At least three officers went into the water to pull her out.

She is now being treated for exposure.

Ontario provincial police issued a warning that same day, warning about ice-covered bodies of water. With the warming temperatures, the ice is not as safe as it once was.

The OPP warning mentioned snowmobile riders especially should take extra precautions. Children and other vulnerable people should be accompanied by an adult when out on the ice

“Ice is constantly changing in response to weather and water conditions and is affected by many different factors including thickness, currents, age of the ice, pressure cracks and snow cover,” the OPP said.
