Woman struck by flying motorcycle says she fights every day with her injuries

A 67-year-old woman, who fought for her life after being struck by a flying motorcycle, read her victim impact statement in court on Thursday.

In 2014, Dorrianne Sears was standing, drinking a coffee near Pleasant Boulevard and Yonge Street, just south of St. Clair, when a motorcycle collided with a truck, sending the bike flying onto the sidewalk.

Sears woke up three months later in the ICU after having suffered life-threatening injuries.

She told the court that before Haytham Markos’ motorcycle hit her, she was healthy and fit and ready for a retirement filled with the travel and adventure, but now she just fights day to day with her injuries.

“Before Mr. Markos struck me, I was very independent. Now I am dependent on others for many of my daily needs,” she told the court.

“Everyday is a grind, and I struggle to get through most days. I’m uncertain what the future holds for me and this is a real source of anxiety and stress.”

Originally charged with stunt driving, the 31-year-old Brampton man, who suffered serious injuries in the crash when he was thrown from the bike, was convicted of dangerous drive cause bodily harm.

Markos’ lawyer said his client’s driving was not thrill seeking or street racing, but rather he was lane changing with a lot of traffic.

The crash was caught on dash cam video.

In court on Thursday, Markos apologized to Sears, saying he didn’t intend for that to happen.

Markos will be sentenced in March.

The crown is asking for 18 months in jail and a driving suspension of five years.
