Driver, Toronto police officer injured in Etobicoke police pursuit

By News staff

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a crash that injured the driver of a diplomatic vehicle and a Toronto police officer in Etobicoke.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says police were trying to stop a vehicle in the Bloor Street West and Islington Avenue area just before 4 p.m. on Thursday.

The driver drove away after an interaction between police and the occupants in that vehicle.

Moments later, the driver struck a vehicle with diplomatic licence plates in the Burnhamthorpe Road and Dundas Street West area. The fleeing vehicle also hit a third car, the SIU said.

The male driver of the diplomatic vehicle was taken to hospital with a serious upper-body injury. A police officer was also injured but the extent of the injuries are not yet known.

The SIU said the two occupants in the fleeing vehicle were arrested.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
