Residents allowed back home after 5-alarm fire in the Junction

By News Staff

Residents have been allowed back into their homes following a stubborn blaze at a commercial laundry building in the Junction.

Firefighters battled the five-alarm blaze at Topper Uniform and Linen on Mulock Avenue in the Keele Street and St. Clair Avenue area for more than eight hours before declaring it under control.

“Our firefighters … are exhausted,” said Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg.

“It’s been a challenging fire just because of the conditions and obviously a lot of snow on the ground. Fortunately everyone’s safe.”

The original call came in at around 5 a.m. after a police officer on patrol noticed smoke coming out of the building.

At the height of the fire, more than 60 fire trucks and support vehicles worked to bring the blaze under control at the long-time family owned business. Their efforts were hampered by a large quantity of winter floor mats which were located in the basement of the building, giving off potentially hazardous smoke and fumes as they burned.

As a precautionary measure, many residents on Mulock Avenue were evacuated with some being sheltered on TTC buses. Residents were allowed back into their homes shortly after 1 p.m.
