Man steals woman’s money, jewelry after ‘cleansing them of evil spirits’

By News staff

Peel regional police have charged a man they allege convinced a woman to give him a large amount of money and her jewelry, after saying he would cleanse them of evil spirits.

Investigators say in July he told the woman he was close to God and would bury the money in the ground and pray to remove the spirits, and would then return the money.

The woman continued to give money to the man.

Another time, the suspect apparently told the woman he had to remove the evil spirits from her jewelry.

The money and jewellery were worth about $61,000. She contacted police after she did not get her money or jewelry back.

Darshan Dhaliwal, 40, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with fraud over $5,000 and breach of recognizance. He appeared in court that day.

Police think it’s likely other people have been duped so they’ve released a photo of the suspect.
