The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a shoplifting suspect was struck and killed during a traffic stop in Clarington.

Around 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Durham police were called about an alleged shoplifting incident at the Home Depot at Harmony and Taunton roads in Oshawa.

Two men were suspected of stealing power tools and driving off at a high speed.

Police searching the area spotted the vehicle going east on Taunton toward Highway 115.

Officers then stopped the vehicle going north on Highway 115 and, during the arrest, had an interaction with one of the men. The man then ran across the highway and was hit by a pickup truck.

Kevin Kenneth McEachern, 35, of Peterborough, was killed.

Five general investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
