Freezing rain warning ends for Toronto

Environment Canada ended its freezing rain warning for the City of Toronto on Tuesday morning.

It was first issued on Monday.

The warning was also lifted for Niagara and Hamilton, but continues in Mississauga, York and Durham.

Highways, roads, sidewalks, and parking lots were icy and slippery through the morning rush. and school buses were affected.

The City of Toronto said its salters had been out since 4 a.m. on Tuesday. In Halton, police said they responded to 12 collision between 4 a.m. and 5:20 a.m. Highway 7 westbound is “extremely slick and best avoided,” officers said.

 

680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor says the freezing rain started in the GTA around 1 a.m. on Tuesday and will change to rain by 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. as the temperature rises.

Environment Canada says the switch over to rain may happen later in other areas of southern Ontario, with rain arriving in the afternoon or evening.
