Fire above restaurant shuts down King near Blue Jays Way

By News Staff

A fire above the restaurant Fred’s Not Here shut down King Street for a couple of hours on Tuesday morning.

The fire began in the kitchen of a third-floor apartment around 2:10 a.m. near Blue Jays Way, east of Spadina Avenue.

The fire was knocked down by 2:25 a.m., Capt. David Eckerman told CityNews. One person was treated at the scene for a minor injury.

The fire was in a kitchen in an apartment above the restaurant, not the restaurant itself. Eckerman said that there could have been smoke and water migration to the restaurant, as a pipe burst, and the health department has been notified.

Fred Luk, the owner of Fred’s Not Here, said in an email to CityNews that the restaurant would be open at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The cause of the fire and the cost of the damage are not yet known.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has not been called in.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said the fire was in the restaurant, and that smoke and water caused significant damage to the restaurant. Eckerman later clarified the fire was in an apartment above the restaurant.
