‘Lunchtime bandit’ nabbed in connection with five bank robberies

By News staff

An alleged bank robber who Toronto police dubbed the “lunchtime bandit” has been arrested and charged in connection with five robberies.

Officers allege the man robbed five banks between Nov. 21 and Dec. 17. All the banks are along Yonge Street, between Davisville and Lawrence avenues.

At a news conference last month, Staff Insp. Mike Earl said many of the robberies occurred around noon or 1 p.m., leading to the nickname.

At the time, Earl said that during each robbery the man walked into the bank with a note saying he is armed. At first, he waited in line and said he wanted to deposit a cheque. He then handed over a note, not a cheque, and demanded cash.

Michael Lilly, 20, who is from Toronto, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with five counts of robbery. He has already appeared in court.
