Police still looking for Mercedes driver after Gardiner multi-car crash

Police are still looking for the driver of a Mercedes in a hit-and-run in last week’s multi-car collision on the Gardiner Expressway.

The Mercedes SUV crashed into an Acura on the eastbound Gardiner, east of Highway 427, around 12:10 a.m. on Jan. 3, leaving the Acura damaged and a passenger sitting in the back badly injured.

Police say the driver of the Mercedes left the scene, leaving the Acura disabled in a live lane of traffic.

As the Mercedes driver left, an airport limousine came from behind and smashed into the disabled Acura, causing more damage and injury.

The driver of the Acura was badly hurt in the second crash because he was turned around in his seat trying to help the injured passenger, a 24-year-old man, who was hurt during the first impact.

All four people in the Acura were injured, two of them critically.

Police say the people in the Acura were members of a church group returning home from spending New Year’s Eve in New York City.

The crash caused a closure on a portion of the Gardiner for eight hours during morning rush hour.

Police are still looking for the driver of the Mercedes and are asking the public and body shops to keep an eye out for the silver 2009-2012 Mercedes G-class SUV with front-end damage.

Toronto police told CityNews alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
