Be careful out there: Slippery and slushy commute in the GTA

By News Staff

A burst of wintry weather hit the GTA early Thursday, causing slippery and slushy road conditions that affected the morning commute.

On Wednesday, Environment Canada issued a weather advisory for parts of southern Ontario, including Toronto. It has since been lifted for much of the GTA.

“With the snow falling during the morning rush hour, holiday travelers and commuters may experience travel delays,” the agency warned.

Some parts of the GTA were hit with around five to eight centimetres of snow, but 680 NEWS meteorologist Harold Hosein said other areas could get up to 10 centimetres.

Some parts of the GTA, especially near the lake, received wet snow or a mix of rain or snow.

“We’ve got snow all across southwestern Ontario, all of the GTA and into eastern Ontario, so wherever you go this morning and into the afternoon hours, you will be experiencing a slippery drive,” Hosein said.

At one point, there were around 60 flight cancellations in and out of Pearson International Airport. Click here to check your flights status.

There was also a snow squall watch in effect for Caledon, Newmarket, Uxbridge, Dufferin and Barrie.

Hosein said another round of snow, around 5-10 centimetres, is on the way for New Year’s Eve.
