Toronto police looking for ‘lunchtime bandit’

By News Staff

Toronto police are looking for a bank robber they’re calling the “lunchtime bandit.”

Officers allege the man has robbed five banks between Nov. 21 and Dec. 17. All the banks are along Yonge Street, between Davisville and Lawrence avenues, Staff Insp. Mike Earl said Tuesday.

Many of the robberies occurred around noon or 1 p.m., leading to the nickname.

Earlier this month, police released photos of the suspect. Police held a news conference on Tuesday after a fifth bank was robbed.

Earl said that during each robbery the man walks into the bank with a note saying that he is armed. At first, he waits in line, and says he wants to deposit a cheque. He then hands over a note, not a cheque, and demands cash.

“The individual is described as preppy. He is in mid-20s, clean-cut, well-dressed, always wearing the same clothes, the same coat, the same hat. He has a medium build and is five-foot-ten to six feet in height. He may have some light freckles on his face,” Earl said.

Police believe the man takes the subway to the banks.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
