Valuables stolen from urns in two Burlington mausoleums

By The Canadian Press

Police say they’re investigating after a number of valuables were stolen from urns in two mausoleums in Burlington.

Halton regional police say the alleged thefts happened between Dec. 2 and Dec. 5 at the Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery and the Bayview Crematorium, Cemetery & Mausoleum.

Police say the alleged thief entered the unlocked mausoleums, and used a tool to break into niches, the locked compartments where urns are stored.

Those urns contain cremated remains, and sometimes objects that were important to the deceased.

Investigators say that valuables and sentimental property were stolen from the niches, including wedding bands, necklaces, charms and bracelets.

Police say it’s not clear how many items were stolen, as they can’t tell whether an urn was disturbed just by looking at it.
