Potential Riverdale murder suspect caught on security camera

By News Staff

Toronto police have released security camera footage of a potential suspect after a man was fatally shot in Riverdale last month.

Marcus Gibson, 24, was killed in a home on Munro Street, near Dundas Street East an Broadview Avenue, just before 4 p.m. on Nov. 27.

Gibson lived with his mother but she wasn’t at home when the shooting happened, Det. Murray Barnes said at a news conference on Friday.

Earlier in the investigation, police said there was no word on suspects or what may have led to the shooting. However, police said they had obtained video evidence at the scene.

On Friday, police released footage from a security camera on Monro north of where Gibson lives. The footage was captured on the day of the shooting.

“We have footage of a person we believe to be the suspect in this murder,” Barnes said.

Barnes said at 3:20 p.m., a person walking south on Munro enters the screen and can be seen putting on gloves. He is wearing dark-coloured clothing and his face is covered.

In the second clip, at 3:56 p.m., he is running north on Munro. Police believe he may have gotten into a vehicle that took off on Munro towards Gerrard.

Police said they have a description of the vehicle but are not releasing it at this time.

Barnes said the potential suspect is wearing a baseball cap, possibly Detroit Tigers, with a distinctive pattern at the peak of the cap.

Barnes said police haven’t received much help from the public and are hoping someone can identify the man in the video.

“Somebody is going to know that person,” Barnes said on Friday.

Police believe Gibson was targeted and are still investigating his relationship with the murderer.

Gibson was previously acquitted in the 2015 murder of Tariq Mohammed, 31, at a downtown Toronto Chinese restaurant. However, at the news conference, Barnes said investigators haven’t found a link between the two incidents.

The other person accused in Mohammed’s death was Ceyon Carrington. He was charged with armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of fail to comply.

Both men were acquitted after the Crown ruled there was no reasonable prospect of conviction.

Carrington has also since been murdered. The 29-year-old was shot multiple times near Carlaw Avenue and Queen Street East in late March.
