By News Staff

A 33-year-old woman is in hospital with serious injuries after she was hit on the head with a skateboard.

The woman was hit as she answered her apartment door around 3 a.m. on Thursday.

Durham police say the assault was related to an incident that happened in June. Police don’t have many details about the June incident. Initially, police told CityNews the dispute was between two groups of teenagers. however, that is not the case, and is likely a landlord-tenant dispute.

An 18-year-old and a 17-year-old knocked on a door on the ground floor of an apartment building on Taunton Road east of Simcoe Street, apparently looking for someone who lived there.  The woman answered the door, briefly argued with the two, and one of them struck her with the skateboard.

The two teens then forced their way inside, but the woman’s husband forced them back into the hallway.

The two teens then ran away and as they fled, one of them broke a window, police allege. Officers chased down the two teens and arrested them on Nonquon Road. One of them had a serious cut on his elbow from smashing the window. He was treated in hospital and remains in custody.

The 17-year-old cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Samuel Stirling, 18, was also arrested. Both of them are charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, and uttering threats.

Correction: Earlier, police said the woman had been hit with a baseball bat. She was hit with a skateboard. Police also indicated the two suspects would be charged with assault causing bodily harm. In fact, they were charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, and uttering threats.

Initially, police said the assault on the woman was the result of a fight between two groups of teenagers. That is not the case.
