Whitby toddler dies after eating pill found on the floor

By News Staff

Durham police are warning people to keep their medicine out of reach after a Whitby toddler died.

Emergency crews were called to Pickering Town Centre on Nov. 19 because a 13-month-old boy was not breathing.

Earlier that day, the parents, along with their son, had visited family members. Police believe the boy went into a bedroom and ate a single pill that was in the unlocked room. Police did not say what type of medication it was.

He died two days later in hospital. His family, who have asked for privacy, said his organs were donated to three other people.

The family also asked police to issue a statement, warning about the dangers of unsecured medication.

It’s especially important this time of year, police said, as family and children visit unfamiliar homes.
