Police have arrested a 56-year-old driver who they say was “heavily intoxicated” during a crash in Oakville on Tuesday afternoon.
Around 4 p.m., the man’s vehicle collided with another vehicle near Dundas Street West and Colonel Williams Parkway, west of Bronte Road. Police said he fled before they arrived, but they tracked him down at his home nearby and arrested him.
He was taken into a station for breath tests and it’s alleged he had almost four times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
Officers charged him with impaired driving – over 80 – and failing to comply with an undertaking. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for one week.
“Of particular concern is that this incident occurred in a heavily populated area, in very close proximity to an elementary school, at a time when children were walking home and numerous school buses were in the vicinity,” said Sgt. Gus Bistas.
“While no injuries were reported, the opportunity for tragedy was certainly present.”
The man was being held for a bail hearing on Wednesday morning.
