Toaster oven sparks fire at Yonge and Gerrard seniors’ residence

By News Staff

A toaster oven sparked a fire at a downtown seniors’ residence early on Tuesday morning.

No one was hurt and other apartments did not need to be evacuated.

Emergency crews were called to the building on Yonge Street north of Gerrard Street around 4:20 a.m.

By that time, the fire had spread to the shelves above the toaster oven and was contained in the kitchen, acting platoon chief James Green said.

The woman who lived in the apartment had left by that time.

“She won’t be able to go back into her apartment but everybody else won’t be affected,” Green said.

It was a relatively small fire, he said.
