SIU investigating after man injured during Brampton police chase

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a 32-year-old man was injured during a police chase in Brampton.

Peel police were pursuing a tractor-trailer in the McLaughlin Road South and Steeles Avenue West area around 4:15 a.m. on Friday. Police said the truck was stolen.

As the officers were trying to stop the truck, the driver struck one of the police cruisers.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said after police removed the man from the vehicle, he was bitten on the leg by a police dog. He was also Tasered by police.

The driver was taken to hospital to be treated for the dog bite and a neck injury. His injuries are believed to be minor.

Police initially said two males were taken into custody after officers chased them on foot. The SIU didn’t provide details on the second arrest.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
