Man charged after grenades seized from Scarborough house

Police have charged a 30-year-old Toronto man after seizing 13 live hand grenades, a semi-automatic handgun and ammunition during a raid on an east-end house on Wednesday night.

Officers from 42 Division and the Emergency Task Force recovered the items from a house on Canlish Road, near Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue East, just after 9 p.m.

The items were a silver semi-automatic Para-Ordinance 9 mm handgun, loaded with 14 rounds, 13, live grenades, a 50-round, 9 mm drum magazine, a 30-round 9 mm over-capacity magazine, and 248 rounds of 9 mm ammunition.

Homes in the neighbourhood were evacuated as a precaution. Nobody was injured.

Arthur Darocha has been charged with 15 weapons offences, including possession of a restricted firearm without a licence, careless storage of a firearm and possess explosive substance.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday afternoon.

Police will be disposing of the grenades with the help of the Canadian Armed Forces.
