Female pedestrian killed as slippery conditions make for treacherous driving

By News Staff

A woman has died after being struck by a vehicle in Leaside.

Police were called to the scene on Eglinton Avenue and Hanna Road shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The 63-year-old woman was without vital signs and bleeding heavily when she was transported to a trauma centre where she was pronounced dead.

Police say the driver remained on the scene. There has been no word if any charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Eighteen people were struck by vehicles on Thursday night.

A male was struck at Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue but his injuries are not believed to be serious. Another person was struck at Black Creek Drive and Weston Road, their injuries were unknown at the time. And a third pedestrian, an older woman, was struck on Lawrence Avenue, just west of Brimley Road.

There have been 65 fatalities this year on city streets, which is equal to 2015’s total. Thirty-five of those were pedestrians.

The worst year in recent years was in 2004 with 66 fatalities.

Speed, driver and pedestrian error are the cause of most fatalities on the road, police say.

Police are urging drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings, especially at dusk and dawn.
