Clown-masked pranksters accused of scaring bystanders in moving vehicle

Scary and creepy clown sightings have been reported across the country, including Toronto, and have now hit Durham Region.

Police have charged three young people for allegedly driving recklessly wearing clown masks and scaring bystanders.

The alleged incident happened around 3:30 a.m. on Friday in the Simcoe Street North and Taunton Road area.

Witnesses called police after seeing the three occupants of the car donning clown masks and stopping near other cars and pedestrians in a dangerous manner.

They also reported seeing the two passengers opening the car doors and attempting to scare people, and leaning out the car windows while the car was moving.

A 19-year-old Oshawa man is charged with causing a nuisance and careless driving. Another 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, both from Oshawa, are each charged with causing a nuisance.

Durham police say since the beginning of the month, they have responded to 31 calls regarding clowns.
