Man killed in Eglinton and Midland hit-and-run, driver sought

A 41-year-old man is dead and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a hit-and-run in the city’s east end.

It happened on Eglinton Avenue East at Midland Avenue just after 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

SIU spokesperson Jason Genarro said it appears the vehicle, a white BMW, was fleeing police when it struck a construction worker.

“A Toronto police officer attempted to stop a vehicle in the area west of Eglinton Avenue and Midland Avenue. That vehicle refused to stop. The officer followed,” he explained.

The construction worker, part of a concrete-cutting team, suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Toronto police found the suspect vehicle on a side street just north of the area. Officers continue to search for the driver.

An officer suffered minor injuries, police said. It’s not yet known if the officer was struck by the vehicle.

Roads in the area were closed for most of the day for the investigation, but have reopened.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
