Man returning to help friend strikes and kills him with truck: Durham police

By News Staff

Durham police are investigating a tragic chain of events that ended with a 29-year-old man dead.

Police believe a 21-year-old man and the victim were in a GMC pickup, parked on Symons Road south of Baseline Road in Bowmanville, around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

Both men were doing drugs, police allege, when the 29-year-old had a medical episode. The driver took him out of the car and gave him CPR. When that wasn’t enough, he drove away for help.

But as he returned, he struck and killed his friend.

The name of the victim, a Clarington man, is not being released at his family’s request.

Zachary Pepper, 21, of Bowmanville, has been charged with impaired care and control of a motor vehicle cause death. Pepper has been released on bail.
