Grandmother fatally shot in Riverdale, police hunting for two suspects

A 61-year-old grandmother has been fatally shot during a shooting in the Riverdale neighbourhood on Saturday.

Police responded to a call for several shots being heard near Dundas Street East and Broadview Avenue around 6 p.m.

Police discovered a woman’s body in an alley behind a home in the Don Mount Court and Kintyre Avenue area of the city. The woman was pronounced at the scene. She has been identified as Peggy Ann Smith.

A woman claiming to be the niece of the victim said it is a very emotional time for the family and that they pray the suspects get caught.

“Them being just so disrespectful to human lives need to be put away for good,” said Catherine. “It won’t bring her back home but it will provide the family a small amount of justice.”

Catherine told CityNews that Peggy was visiting her granddaughter’s home and was on the front steps when the shooting happened.

“I go to church with her, my kids go to church with her,” Mashida, who asked that her last name not be used, said. “I feel like I’m in a dream.”

Mashida also said that the woman was sitting outside when the shooting happened.

“This lady was an innocent victim, just sitting outside from where she was supposed to be,” she said.

Detective Srgnt Hank Idsinga said he finds it hard to believe that she was the actual target.

Police said they are searching for two shooters that were last seen travelling northbound towards Dundas Street.

“This shouldn’t have happened to her, she didn’t deserve this no one does but especially the good ones like her,” said Catherine. “I will miss my Aunt Peggy very much.”
