Three-year-old suffers life-threatening injuries in car crash

A three-year-old boy is in critical condition following a car accident Saturday morning in mid-town.

Police say the single-car crash happened just after 8 a.m. when a car struck a pole on Avenue Road near Roselawn Avenue.

Paramedics say the infant suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. A man was also taken to a trauma centre in serious condition. A woman, believed to be the driver of the car, was not seriously injured.

The cause of the crash is not yet known but a witness who heard the crash pleaded for drivers to ‘slow down’ when travelling on this stretch of Avenue Road.

“I just hope people stop driving so fast on Avenue Road,” said Joyce Hu. “Please stop driving so fast!”

“We have kids here. …Kids are going back to school next week. I don’t want my kids to get hurt – or anybody else’s kids to get hurt.

“Have some patience. It’s not a racing track.”

Justin Kieswetter was travelling southbound when he came upon the scene. Along with the help of some other pedestrians who were standing nearby, they assisted in getting the injured male passenger out of the smoking car.

“When I found him he was up against the windshield. He was unconscious at the time but he was breathing,” said Kieswetter. “We went around, broke a couple of windows and got him out as carefully as we could.”

Kieswetter said the female driver managed to get the child out of the back seat, taking the infant to a nearby ambulance for first aid.

Investigators say they are interested in speaking with someone who was driving northbound on Avenue Road in a black coloured vehicle around the time of the incident.
