Serious message behind Toronto’s cheeky new condom campaign

By News Staff

Wrap it and ride. That’s the simple but bold message about the importance of safe sex coming from Toronto Public Health on Friday as they kicked off their latest free condom campaign..

This year’s condom wrappers reflect Toronto’s pride and joy — the world famous 3D sign at Nathan Phillips Square.

Along with this year’s cheeky slogan there is a serious message behind the campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the rise of sexually transmitted diseases in our city.

According to Toronto Public Health, over 5,600 cases of chlamydia have been reported in Toronto so far this year — over 1,000 new cases in the month of June alone, That’s up over six per cent from 2015.

There is an eight per cent increase in reported cases of gonorrhea, almost 1,400 since January.

The biggest jump comes in hepatitis B with the number of cases having risen by more than 100 per cent from this time last year.

The free condoms were first unveiled in 2014 as part of a tongue-in-cheek campaign that played off Toronto street names. Last year, the Pan Am Games got the condom treatment.

Toronto Public Health says it hopes to distribute more than three million free condoms this year.
