Police charge Niagara region man in dispensary explosion

Police have charged a 29-year-old man in connection with the explosion at a medical marijuana dispensary in Toronto last week.

David Coleman of Smithville faces six charges including mischief endangering life, arson and three counts of possession of a Schedule II substance for the purposes of trafficking.

Police and fire officials were called to Tweeder Medicinal Dispensary on Eglinton Avenue West back on Aug. 19 after an explosion blew out the front window of the establishment, scattering glass all over the sidewalk.

Police say one man suffered severe burns to his face and arms as a result of the blast.

Following an investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal and police, Coleman was arrested.

Ward 22 Coun. Josh Matlow said this specific dispensary has been a concern to area residents for months.

“I can confirm that my office received a complaint from a resident about this dispensary and we requested Toronto police to investigate,” said Matlow.

Police did say the business had been previously raided back on May 26.

Mayor John Tory said the city is doing whatever it can to control the spread of unlawful dispensaries.

“City authorities and police take whatever action they can within the context of the law. These are establishments operating contrary to the law, outside of the law, and they don’t belong in huge numbers, or any numbers, until the law is changed, in neighbourhoods or with retail stores,” he said back on Aug. 20.
