Man wanted for alleged assault and fleeing police in Markham

By News Staff

Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man wanted in connection with a domestic dispute on Wednesday in Markham.

York Regional Police were called to a parking lot in the area of Kennedy Road and Lee Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. after a man and a woman had been involved in an altercation.

When police arrived, the man attempted to flee in a 2004 red Pontiac Grand Am with the woman and a 16-month old infant in the car. He drove towards one police cruiser at a high rate of speed, causing the officer to swerve in order to avoid a head-on crash. Other officers attempted to block the exits to the parking lot but the suspect continued to drive towards them at high speed, eventually climbing a curb and exiting the area.

He was last seen travelling north on Kennedy Road, west onto Highway 407 and then south on Highway 400.

Police decided against a high-speed pursuit due to safety concerns for the occupants in the car.

At around 2 a.m., the car was located in the area of Sheppard Avenue and Fairview Mall Drive in North York. The woman and the infant were with the vehicle but the suspect had fled.

Brandon Weinstein, 23, of no fixed address is wanted for assault and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

If anyone has any information they are asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
