Altidore scores 3rd goal in 4 games, Toronto FC ties Houston

HOUSTON – Jozy Altidore scored his third goal in four games and Toronto FC played to a 1-1 tie with the 10-man Houston Dynamo on Sunday night in a game postponed Saturday because of rain.

Toronto (10-7-7) had its four-game winning streak snapped. Houston (4-10-9) is winless in six games.

“Whenever you’re up a man for 45 minutes I think you feel like you should come away with three points on a game like that,” said TFC coach Greg Vanney.

“What was disappointing for me is that it just wasn’t a very clean second half by us, in terms of creating chances and making sure that we maintained our shape.”

Altidore tied it in the 24th minute. Sebastian Giovinco rolled a corner kick to the penalty spot and Altidore put it into the net with a one touch. Altidore’s sliding left-footed shot in the 64th minute hit the post.

“He’s a big part of what we’re doing here, to get him back and going is very important,” midfielder Michael Bradley said about his teammate Altidore.

Cristian Maidana scored from a difficult angle in the eighth minute after Mauro Manotas chipped the defence. But the Dynamo played a man down for the entire second half. Abdoulie Mansally received a red card in first-half stoppage time for taking down Giovinco on a breakaway.

Toronto lost two starters to injury in the match. Defender Justin Morrow suffered a hip contusion while Defender Mark Bloom left with an ankle sprain.

“Not sure yet, just because I’m not sure how long term,” said Vanney when asked about the seriousness of both injuries. “I think by and large both of them seem like contusions. Maybe relatively deep contusions. I’m not exactly sure yet. We’ll see.”

It was the fifth consecutive draw in the series. The last win for either team came in 2011.
