CW’s ‘Supergirl’ and ‘The Flash’ planning musical crossovers

By The Associated Press

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin better work on their vocal exercises. There will be two musical crossover episodes later in the season on The CW shows “Supergirl” and “The Flash.”

Executive Producer Greg Berlanti announced the plans Thursday at an annual event for journalists who cover television.

The idea makes sense because a number of the show’s cast members have musical backgrounds.

Benoist and Gustin had roles on “Glee,” while Jesse L. Martin of “The Flash” and Jeremy Jordan of “Supergirl” are Broadway vets.

Berlanti said he hopes to make the songs available for fans afterward.

Victor Garbor, who is on a different DC Comics series, “Legends of Tomorrow,” has also expressed interest in taking part.

“He was pitching me songs the other night at dinner,” said Berlanti, who said he wasn’t sure exactly who would be featured in the episodes.

He added that the music will be made up of mostly pre-existing songs but said: “We have been talking about trying to write at least one original song per episode.”

Exactly how the music will be explained wasn’t revealed but Berlanti said “we’ll be very careful about how we break into song” and said some of it could be “in the characters’ heads.”

Both “Supergirl” and “The Flash” return with new seasons in October.
