Bird man of Toronto finds a new roost

Toronto’s bird man has flown the coop. Actually, he’s just relocated

For the past five years, Ross Ward has been carving and sanding small wooden birds at the corner of Queen Street West and University Avenue.

But as of this week, you’ll find him at the corner of Bloor and Ted Rogers Way.

He tells 680 NEWS, one of his most memorable moments involved a young blind girl with her family.

“They asked if they could pick a bird up and let her hold it,” recalled Ward. “When she ran her hand over it to picture what it looked like, she had the most beautiful smile.”

Ward sells the small birds for $10. He also sells larger birds for more. It takes him about an hour to finish each creation.

He says he and his wife were in the neighbourhood on Monday for a medical appointment and while he waited he sat at the corner carving and sold everything in just a couple hours.

He says customers at his old corner were mainly tourists. He says the customers at his new location are working people who have helped his sales numbers through word of mouth.
