Scarborough murder victim was ambushed, police say

By News Staff

Police say a Toronto man who was shot and killed in the city’s east end Thursday night was ambushed.

Around 10:15 p.m., residents on Rushley Drive, near Lawrence Avenue East and Brimley Road, called 911 about a shooting that had taken place on their street.

When police arrived, they found the victim, Kevaughn Morgan, 21. He was taken to Sunnybrook hospital, where he died.

“This shooting was an ambush-style attack,” Det. Paul Worden told reporters on Friday.

“The shooter was lying in wait for the deceased and began shooting without warning or any prior communication.”

Worden said the gunman may have been following Morgan or had him under surveillance before the shooting.

“This was a cowardly attack that took place in a highly-populated residential neighbourhood,” Worden said.

“As tragic as these results were, it could have even been worse if other members of the community had been struck by any of the fired shots.”

Although witnesses reported hearing between two and five gunshots, it wasn’t clear how many times he had been hit. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

The suspect, who might have had an accomplice, was last seen running south on Marcos Boulevard from Lawrence.

He is black, 20-25 years old, six feet tall, with a thin to medium build and short, dark hair. He was wearing grey or light-coloured, loose-fitting track pants, a grey or white striped shirt and white running shoes.

Police don’t have a clear motive and are appealing to Morgan’s friends to come forward, as well as anyone who might have information about his whereabouts from 12 p.m. Thursday.

They would also like residents on Marcos Boulevard to review their security camera footage between 9:45 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. Thursday and to call the homicide unit at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) if they have video of the suspect.
