SIU investigates after Taser used in arrest of Hamilton woman

By The Canadian Press

Ontario’s police watchdog says it is investigating after a woman carrying a knife in Hamilton was struck twice with a stun gun by police during an arrest.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) says just before 1 a.m. Monday, a taxi driver noticed a female pedestrian brandishing a large knife.

The taxi driver notified Hamilton police officers who were nearby.

The SIU says the stun gun was deployed twice on the 31-year-old woman after “an interaction” with the officers.

She was taken to Hamilton’s St. Joseph’s Hospital and admitted for treatment of unknown injuries.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
