The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired veteran outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. from the San Diego Padres.
Upton has a .256 batting average this season with 16 homers and 45 RBIs in 92 games.
He was selected by Tampa Bay with the second overall pick in the 2002 draft and made his big-league debut with the Rays in 2004.
Minor-league right-handed pitcher Hansel Rodriguez goes to San Diego in the deal.
The teams will continue their three-game interleague series Tuesday night at Rogers Centre.
