Police say man forced woman he met on Facebook into life of prostitution

Toronto police say a man who befriended a woman on Facebook forced her into a life of prostitution when they both moved to Toronto from abroad.

Police say Ankush Avishek Monebhurrun met a 19-year-old woman online in 2013.

In 2016, they both moved to Canada, settling in Toronto.

That’s when police allege Monebhurrun ordered her to perform sex acts for money while working at a spa.

Police say Monebhurrun gave the woman a strict quota and monitored her constantly. They also accuse him of assaulting her several times.

When the victim showed up for work on Thursday, co-workers noticed visible injuries and called police.

Monebhurrun, 21, was subsequently arrested and is facing the following charges.

  • Trafficking in Persons
  • Sexual Assault
  • Assault
  • Material Benefit Persons Over 18 years
  • Material Benefit from Sexual Services
  • Exercising Control

Police believe there could be other victims. If you know anything, contact the authorities.
