Charges laid against parents of baby girl left in Markham vehicle

By News staff

Charges have been laid against the parents after police say they left their baby in a locked car outside a Costco store in Markham on Tuesday.

Just after 6 p.m., York regional police were called the store’s parking lot at 1 Yorktech Dr., near Highway 7 and Woodbine Avenue, after concerned citizens spotted a three-month-old baby girl left alone in a vehicle with the windows closed.

When officers arrived, they broke the windows, took her out of the car and placed her in an air-conditioned emergency vehicle to cool down. She was assessed by York paramedics and is in good health.

The citizens found the baby in the car around 5:45 p.m. but waited around 15 minutes to call police, hoping that the parents would show up.

The baby was returned to the parents once they came out of the store.

Police say the parents were charged under the Child and Family Services Act with leaving a child unattended.

The Children’s Aid Society is investigating.

The parents are due in court on Aug. 22. Their names will not be released to protect the identity of the child.
