Chemical smell at Mississauga recycling pant, no serious injuries

By News Staff

A chemical reaction at a Mississauga recycling plant forced residents to keep their windows closed and the air conditioning off on one of the hottest days of the year, but no serious injuries were reported.

Emergency crews, including the hazardous materials (HazMat) team, were called to Avonhead Road, near Southdown and Lake Shore roads, around 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Peel police closed Avonhead as smoke billowed from building. Fire officials later said there was no danger to the public, but they were taking every precaution because of the odour.

Several people were examined by paramedics at the scene but no one was taken to hospital. There are other industrial buildings in the area and while some employees may have left because of the smoke, there were no official evacuations.

It is now safe for residents to open their windows and turn on the A/C.

It’s not yet known what caused the chemical reaction.
