Scary moments for competitors as funnel cloud comes near Alberta stampede

By The Canadian Press

There have been some tense moments at the Ponoka Stampede after a large funnel cloud moved through the area.

Environment Canada issued a tornado warning Friday evening for Ponoka, north of Red Deer, and Maskwacis, though it was later downgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning.

Social media was deluged with photos and videos of the funnel cloud, none of which showed it touching down.

However, one woman said on Twitter that her sister’s house had been badly damaged by the storm.

One video showed cowboys at the stampede watching the twister, while their horses wandered calmly nearby.
