OPP cracking down on unsafe drivers over Canada Day long weekend

By News staff

Enjoy your Canada Day long weekend, and enjoy it safely. That’s the message from Ontario provincial police who hope not to see a repeat of last weekend when eight people were killed in highway crashes.

As with every long weekend, the OPP will be out in full-force targeting distracted, impaired and aggressive drivers.

“We don’t want to see a repeat of what we saw this past weekend […] absolute tragedy,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told 680 NEWS.

Last weekend, eight people were killed in four separate crashes on OPP-patrolled roads, including four people in a horrific crash on Highway 400 near Finch Avenue.

A motorcyclist and his passenger also died in a separate crash.

So far this year, 128 people have been killed on provincial roads.
