Family of women killed in fiery Hwy. 400 crash searching for Good Samaritan

By News staff and The Canadian Press

The family of three generations of women killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Ontario’s Highway 400 is searching for a “Good Samaritan” whose actions may have saved a two-year-old boy.

Isabela Kuci, 5, her mother Valbona Vokshi, 35, and her grandmother Xhemile Vokshi, 55, as well as Maria Lipska, 27, who is not related to the family, were killed in the crash.

Blerta Vokshi – the aunt, sister and daughter to three accident victims – and her two-year-old son Aron were in another car involved in the collision.

Lawyers for the family said a Good Samaritan saved Aron’s life.

“Aron was stuck in the vehicle… and Blerta was unable to take him out due to her injuries at the time,” the lawyer said. “There was a witness, a woman, a Good Samaritan, who stopped at the side of the road, took him out of the car seat and saved this little boy as their car went on fire. If anybody knows who this person is, the family would like to thank her personally, as it is likely she saved Aron’s life.”

The family was on their way back from Canada’s Wonderland at the time of the crash.

“This is a nightmare. This is just a nightmare. I can’t … as a mother myself, it’s hard for me as a lawyer to keep my composure. This is a nightmare. It’s a five-year-old child,” a lawyer for the family said during a press conference on Wednesday.

“They were at Canada’s Wonderland. They were there, with the five-year-old and the two-year-old, to enjoy the day like any normal family does – like I do. Like everybody does.”

In a statement read by lawyers on Wednesday, Blerta Vokshi said she hasn’t had the time to process the events of the crash.

“What I am able to process is that my life will never be the same again,” the statement read. “This is something that I am still trying to accept. I cannot put into words the grief, the tears and shock that I feel. I’m forever grateful for the many thoughts and prayers that have been sent our way.”

She said her mother was in the process of becoming a Canadian citizen.

“My mother Xhemile was my biggest role model. She loved this country more than anyone I know,” the statement continued. “She felt a belonging in this community. Her love as a grandmother to Aron and Isabela was beautiful to watch and brought such joy to their lives.”

“My niece Isabela was my angel. She was a beautiful person inside and out who brought light to all of our lives,” she said.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes near Finch Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. on Friday. It involved 12 vehicles, including three transport trucks.

The crash ignited a fire that gutted one of the truck trailers and two other vehicles.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the crash was “absolutely preventable” and that investigators were looking into the actions of the driver of one of the transport trucks involved in the crash.

“The collision is focusing on the actions of some of the commercial vehicles, or one of the commercial vehicles to see whether or not the driver didn’t stop or slow down in time as traffic was slowing down,” Schmidt said.

So far, no charges have been laid.
