By News staff

A horse trainer from Toronto is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after an incident at the Fort Erie racetrack.

Niagara regional police say that  just after 5 p.m. on Sunday a horse became skittish and broke away from its handler.

The horse panicked and smashed through a barrier, knocking a 66-year-old man to the ground.

The handler is in critical condition, while the horse has been euthanized due to injuries it suffered.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating.
