Deadly Hwy. 400 crash likely caused by ‘driver inattention:’ police

By News staff

Ontario provincial police tell 680 NEWS that Friday night’s deadly crash on Highway 400 was likely caused by inattentive driving.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes near Finch Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. It involved 12 vehicles, including three transport trucks.

Four people died in the crash, including one child believed to be a four-year-old girl.

Police are investigating one of the truck drivers involved in the pileup.

“The collision is focusing on the actions of some of the commercial vehicles, or one of the commercial vehicles to see whether or not the driver didn’t stop or slow down in time as traffic was slowing down,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said on Monday.

Two people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while several others sustained minor injuries and remained at the scene.

Three of the deceased, all female, were all from the same vehicle, including the little girl. Their identities have not been released.

The identity of the fourth victim is also not yet known. It’s also not known what vehicle that person was in.

The crash ignited a fire that gutted one of the truck trailers and two other vehicles.

Police spent hours reconstructing the crash and two southbound lanes were still closed until Saturday afternoon for re-paving.

So far, no charges have been laid.
