Maple Leafs to host outdoor game Jan. 1; full 2016 schedule released

By News Staff

The Toronto Maple Leafs are taking their show outdoors.

The Leafs will be hosting the first-ever NHL Centennial Classic, a regular-season outdoor game against the Detroit Red Wings at BMO Field on Sunday, January 1.

It’s not the first time the Leafs have played an outdoor game. The Leafs beat the Red Wings at the Winter Classic in 2014 in front of a record 105,491 fans at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

While there won’t be 105,000 fans at BMO Field – the stadium holds just over 30,000 fans for soccer games – as the first outdoor game held in Toronto, you can bet tickets will be scarce.

The Leafs released their entire 2016-17 schedule on Tuesday. The team will begin training camp in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and host a preseason game at the Scotiabank Centre. The team will also host preseason games in St. Catharines and Hamilton.

The Leafs will start the season in Ottawa against the Senators on Wednesday, Oct. 12, and the home opener slated for Saturday, Oct. 15 against the Boston Bruins.

The team will have 18 back-to-back games during the season, and the team’s longest home stand will be five games between Dec. 11 and 19.
