First phase of eastern Highway 407 set to open Monday morning

By News Staff

Commuters in the eastern GTA will have a new option to get to work Monday morning with the opening of Phase 1 of the 407 highway extension.

And best of all, it will be free until the end of the year.

The province confirmed Friday that the first portion of the 407 extension will be open to traffic Monday. The highway will open from Brock Road in Pickering to Harmony Road in Oshawa. Highway 412, a new highway connecting the 401 to the 407, will also open on Monday. The connection is just east of Lake Ridge Road on the 401.

The new stretch of the 407 and the 412 will be toll-free until 2017.

The second phase of the project — connecting the 407 to Highway 35 and building Highway 418 to connect to the 401 just past Courtice — is expected to open in late 2017.

The Highway 407 East Project is part of the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario’s history, an investment of about $160 billion over 12 years. The ongoing project supports some 110,000 jobs.

Drivers who use highways 407 ETR, 407 and 412 can use one transponder and will receive just one invoice, making the tolling process seamless.
